Gordano Round Marathon 2017

Date:
Saturday, November 4, 2017 - 08:30
Distance:
42.00 km

Welcome to the inaugural Gordano Round Marathon set in the beautiful Gordano Valley near Bristol - taking in coastal paths, woodland and many beautiful views. The route follows the waymarked Gordano Round route with some modifications for safety reasons. Our website will provide a GPX file of the route. The course is approximately 27 miles with 750 metres of ascent.

The course has approximately 6 miles of roads or tarmac pavements/paths. The remainder of the route is on trail, grass and coastal path including some stretches of bare rock. The route in November is likely to be wet and muddy. The coast path has some cliff edges close to the path and trail/fell shoes with a good tread are strongly recommended. Previous marathon experience is also recommended. There is a cut off time of 7 hours to ensure everyone is back safe before darkness. Our aid station at 12.25 miles will direct runners back to the finish line (approx 2 miles further) after 3 hours.

Navigation - It will be mainly self-navigable but marshals will be on the route in key positions and road crossings. You will be assisted by the Gordano Round way markings and other markings made on paths by the organisers. We recommend that you take the time to study the maps of the route and GPX files as well as making recces of the route itself in order to be able to navigate effectively on the day. The organisers will be leading several recce runs in the build up to the event.

Aid stations will be provided around the course providing drinks and a range of nibbles (details to be confirmed).

There will be some distance markers around the course but please don’t expect them at each mile. We reserve the right to modify the exact route in case of conditions beyond our control (for example landslips on the coast path).

Some paths on the route are narrow and widely used by dog walkers. Please be courteous to all other path users and give way as necessary. Please ensure that you follow the countryside code and in particular:

consider the local community and other people enjoying the outdoors
leave gates and property as you find them and follow paths unless wider access is available
leave no trace of your visit and take your litter home
Charity - All profits from this marathon will be donated to the Children’s Hospice South West. CHSW provide hospice care for children with life-limiting conditions and their whole family across the South West. The care they offer is wide ranging; respite and short breaks, emergency care, palliative care and end of life care. One of their three hospices; Charlton Farm is on the route of the marathon and one aid station will be manned by some of the parents and children staying at the hospice so you will see at first hand where your money is going!

We will be encouraging you to raise your own sponsorship in aid of our chosen charity.

Mandatory Kit - The weather can be cold or wet (or both) in November and the days are short and sometimes misty, so some kit will be mandatory - see the website for details.
