Southville RC Newsletter April 2024

Hi Everyone,

Quarterly General Meeting

Thanks to everyone who attended March's Quarterly General meeting. The minutes can be read
here.

At the meeting we agreed on our new
Privacy Notice and the England Athletics Code of Conduct. Please take time to read the policies as they form part of SRC membership.

SRC Club Championship 2024

The club championship is back for 2024. It’s a bit of fun to encourage people to take part in racing, have a target to motivate them,  do events they may possibly not consider and of course there's the social element. This year it will run from April to June and will consist of 9 races  with 5 of these  to count. The most important thing about the SRCc is…… anybody can win, whether they’re fast or slow.  It just requires people to try and improve as they do each race.   So without further ado, and for everyone who hasn’t taken part before or is new to the club, here’s how it works:

  1. The Championship consists of 9 races ( Club Champ race table). You need a minimum of 5 to count.  If you do more than 5 races, your worst results will drop out of the calculation.

  2. For each race championship entrants will be given a target time. Beat your target and you get points. 1 point for every second you beat your time to a maximum of 60 points. Minus 1 point for every second slower than your target to a maximum of 30 points.

  3. It’s up to you to enter each race  and it must be as a Southville Running Club runner, no exceptions - you will need to be both a member of the club and have an England Athletics licence. Please remember that for Parkruns, you need to change the club on your parkrun profile to Southville Running Club if you haven’t already. It is the club champs plus it’s hard to go through hundreds of names on a race result list.

  4. There is a joker which will be played on your 5th race entered.  Doubles your points scored in the race or halves your losses.

  5. You must enter the championship before Thursday 4th April, by entering here your name, which group leader you normally run with, plus if you have any, results from your last races. Targets will be published  the day before the race on the table here Champ race table. This will give you your target. You won’t know before this.

A huge thank you to Chris Hopes for organising the SRCc once again!

WhatsApp

Southville Running Club now has a new and official WhatsApp community. It's the perfect place to stay up to date with what we're all doing, share lifts, and just chat about all things running.

We've got various channels set up so you can subscribe to what interests you, including parkrun, socials, SRC announcements and general discussion.

To join you must be an SRC member - if you're not yet a member, head to our new and improved
membership page. Then email us with your name and mobile number, and we'll add you to the group.

New website

On which note, you may have noticed that
our website has had a refresh. Big thank yous to Mark Chesser for leading the redesign, to Mike Karthäuser for managing our website for many years, and to SRC's co-founder Dave Williams who has been generously paying our hosting bills.

Social news

Thanks to Laura Pease for organising the March Padel social!

For April's main social event, we'll be hosting another New Members' Social on Saturday 20th April. Once again we're holding a coffee social especially (but not exclusively) for our new members.

We'll be grabbing coffees at the Tobacco Factory on North Street. We'll meet at 11am, which gives everyone time to parkrun, shower etc. Come along and get reacquainted!

Parkrun news

We always make a special effort to turn out in our green tops at the first Saturday of the month in Ashton Court. The next one will be on Saturday 6th April.

A week later, for April's Parkrun tourism we're heading over the bridge again to
Lydney Parkrun on 13th April. It's three laps of a mixed terrain course at the boating lake.

In May we'll be switching it up a bit. To celebrate the 30th birthday of our club captain Sophie Patten (who is jointly responsible for the big SRC turnouts), on Saturday 4th May we're heading to
Clevedon parkrun. We'll be going for a dip afterwards, so bring your swimming cossies.

Two weeks later on 18th May we'll be doing another SRC volunteer takeover, this time in
Blaise Castle parkrun. Head to the Facebook event to put your name down, or email us if you're not on Facebook.

Great Bristol 10k and Half Marathon - call for volunteers

We have 19 volunteer spaces allocated to us this year (6 on Cumberland Rd, 7 at Queen’s Square and a few more TBC)!

Please comment on
the volunteering post on the Facebook event if you can definitely volunteer on the day, and include your location preference.

You must then register
via Great Run’s website under Southville AC and Sophie can allocate you a place.

Remember we get a donation to the club for every volunteer we provide so do get involved 🤑

If you don’t end up volunteering we’ll have a big group from club cheering on the day - details coming soon!

And in other Great Bristol Run news, the Hen & Chicken is again confirmed as the venue to meet for food and drinks afterwards.

Cotswold Way Relay

We've entered three teams for this year's Cotswold Way Relay - Mixed (minimum 4 women), Open (no restrictions) and Over 40s. The organisers will confirm how many teams they've granted us soon.

The Cotswold Way Relay features 100 miles of beautiful scenery and trail running over 10 stages between Chipping Camden and Bath Abbey, of between 7 and 12 miles in length. If you haven't signed up,
please put your name on the spreadsheet. Although we have over 30 names already, there will almost certainly be drop-outs, so if you put your name down now there is a very good chance you'll be in the team in July.

And we'll also need people to drive on the day just as much as we need runners - so please put your name down if you can support us that way too.

Race news

Put Tuesday June 11th in your diaries - it's the Clevedon Midsummer 10k, which always sees a huge SRC turnout. It features a flat, fast course on winding country roads. Watch this space for details of where we'll be going for food afterwards.
