Southville RC Newsletter March 2024

Hi Everyone,

Quarterly General Meeting

Our next Quarterly General Meeting will be in the back bar of the Southbank after running on Tuesday 19 March. (No need to jog up North Street this time.)

We will kick off at 8pm.

The agenda will be circulated via this newsletter and the Facebook event page in advance of the QGM. Our ongoing constitutional reform, the financial update and how we bring in new group leaders will be top of the agenda. If there's anything you'd like to be considered, please email the Secretary.

Track is back!

Spring is beginning to spring, so track is back! Hurray! We have another season (our seventh)! A huge thank you to Jim Sheeran for organising another season of track sessions.

Every Thursday evening from April 4th to September 12th (except May 16th, May 30th, July 11th) at 6.30pm, you can run around in circles in different pace groups and maybe improve your speed endurance at the old Whitchurch athletics stadium, now the Bristol Family Cycling Centre.

(Well, not circles, obvs, but not ovals or ellipses either: in a QI-type twist, it turns out that its mathematical shape is....a 'stadium', a rectangle with two semicircles stuck on the end.)

Anyway, there will be much more information about the sessions nearer the time. All are welcome.

For info, the sessions are led by an experienced coach (Rob Hingston), Jim is EA LiRF qualified and there are usually other LiRFs there too (it is a condition of liability insurance to have one). There is a £3 cost per runner to cover the track hire/coach's fee.

See y'all there!

Social news

Thanks to everyone who came to last week's Skittles Social!

This March Laura Pease is organising a Padel social on Wednesday 20th March at 7pm - no previous play needed!

If you’ve not heard of padel, it’s a cross between tennis and squash, played in an enclosed court, in doubles.

Surge Padel can offer us an intro to padel session for an hour, £7.50 per person (balls and racquets included). This includes tips, tricks and coaching to understand the sport and time to play.

Space for a maximum of 32 people. To join click "going" on the Facebook event or (for those not on Facebook) email us; payment will need to be made in advance.

No Padel courts in BS3 yet, so it means travelling to Fishponds, Bristol, BS16 3JB. They have free car park, bar also for post game analysis.

If you’d like to book more play time, this can be done separately direct with Surge Padel.

Parkrun news

We always make a special effort to turn out in our green tops at the first Saturday of the month in Ashton Court. This month's has already happened and the next will be on Saturday 6th April.

Once a month we head further afield for an SRC Parkrun Tourism day, and for March we're heading to the Welsh side of the Severn Bridge next week on Saturday 9th March.

A big thank you to everyone who helped out for our volunteer takeover of Ashton Court parkrun on Saturday 24th.

If you enjoyed making parkrun happen, do consider contacting one of the local parkruns to help out again.

We'll also soon be recruiting for the SRC volunteer squad for the Great Bristol Half Marathon and 10k - more information will follow on our Facebook event page and this newsletter.

New kit pre-orders - order by next Sunday

We are now taking new pre-orders for Southville Running Club official kit online at Scimitar Clubs for technical running vests and technical running t-shirts.

Pre-orders are only open until next Sunday 10th March, with delivery expected 15-22 April.

This time postage is free as they are delivering in bulk to a member of the club committee - our thanks to Quartermaster Sam Lewis. You will be able to pick up your new kit at club nights on Tuesday or Thursday, or at other times/places in Southville at Sam L's discretion.

A number of runners have said the new line of kit tends to come out larger than the old Ronhill tops. If your size when ordered does not fit, the club will buy the kit back at cost as long as you have not run in it.

We no longer stock kit at BW Cycles and will not be doing another kit pre-order until the summer - so do not miss your chance to run in club colours 💚🤍

To pre-order, head to Scimitar's website to purchase online. After entering your billing address untick the “deliver to different address” box below it. There is no need to add a delivery address.

August 16-18 - SRC Jurassic Extravaganza

Fancy running (or walking) 23km of trails around the Jurassic Coast with 4 pub stops along the way? This is the event for you!

If you're interested in joining us on August 16-18, Sophie will be booking the campsite very soon, so please head to the Facebook event ASAP to mark yourself as "Going", or email us if you're not on Facebook.

Race news

Race season is upon us and we had some great results in February, including a massive turnout for the Ironwood challenge. Jo and Kerry took two of the women's podium places in 2nd and 3rd, while Teresa and Kerry both won their category.

There was also a 1h27 PB for Liam at the Brighton Half into the teeth of the wind, and other great results at the Weston Half, Green Man and Bath Two Tunnels.

Big races for March include the Big Cheese and the Bath Half Marathon, both of which take place on Sunday 17th March.

Hi viz requirement ends next month

Daffodils are out, blossom is on the trees and spring will soon truly arrive on Tuesday 2nd April, which will be the first Tuesday after the clocks have gone forward, and the requirement to wear hi viz on running nights is therefore removed.

Please continue to bear in mind your safety and visibility.
