Southville RC Newsletter February 2024

Hi Everyone,

Social news

Thanks to Chris Hopes for organising January's New Members' Social. It was great to see some new faces (and all the old ones). As it was such a success we're looking at having another New Members' Social in a few months; watch this space.

Our next social is of course the SRC Skittles Social this Friday 9th February at 7pm.

You don't need any experience, teammates or talent; just turn up with £2 towards the room hire. (You may also want to keep another £1 for Killer.) We'll be explaining the rules and randomly assigning teams on the night, and skittles is very easy to play.

Don't be fashionably late; if you turn up after the 7.30pm kick-off, we might not be able to get you into a team.

There will be a prize for the best team on the night (and potentially more to be won).

Join our squad for the Cotswold Way Relay

Last year we sent two teams with a total of 20 runners (plus drivers and other support) to the Cotswold Way Relay. Entries for the 2024 race open this week and we're hoping to have at least a couple of teams on the start line again. Penny Guess and Sam Blanning will be co-captains.

The race is on Saturday July 6 and takes in a total of 103 miles across 10 stages. They vary in length from around 7 miles to 12; all of them feature stunning scenery and some testing trails and hill climbs. At around 6pm we head to Bath Abbey to cheer in our final runners, then head for post-race food.

If you're interested, please put your name on this spreadsheet. We'll be deciding how many teams to enter and in which categories based on the results.

Parkrun news

We always make a special effort to turn out in our green tops at the first Saturday of the month in Ashton Court. The next will be on Saturday 2nd March.

Once a month we head further afield for an SRC Parkrun Tourism day, and February's will be Pomphrey Hill in Mangotsfield on Saturday 10th February.

And on February 24th we'll be staging another takeover of Ashton Court parkrun. This is when we'll be filling out the whole volunteer roster as a club (and potentially adding some pacers) to give back to the parkrun community.

The roster for the 24th is now full - a big thank you to everyone who volunteered. So please do join us for the run and make a lot of noise to show our SRC spirit.

Race news

Nailsea RC's Ironwood Challenge takes place on Sunday 25 February. This event always sees a big Southville turnout and is highly recommended, consisting of six-ish miles of hills, forest trail and the infamous rope climb. Make sure you head up to the Miner's Rest afterwards for refuelling.

If you don't fancy that, there's also the first of Relish Running's Two Tunnels races in Bath on the same day, featuring 5k, 10k, half-marathon, and colourburst runs for the kids. (But if you're at Ironwood, you won't miss out as the Two Tunnels also has June and August editions.)

Cheddar RC's Big Cheese race on Sunday 17th March has just opened for entries and features 15 miles of beautiful off road running in the Mendips.

Finally, a big congratulations for the Southville ladies' team who came third at the Doynton Hard Half.
