Southville RC Newsletter November 2023

Hi Everyone,

Nightingale Nightmare 2023

Once again our Nightingale Nightmare 10k was a huge success, with hundreds of happy and satisfied runners. And we all had a great time too; dozens of us got our best fancy dress on and turned out to make the event happen. A huge thank you to all the

  • team leaders

  • marshals

  • HQ people

  • tech crew

  • start/finish crew

  • caterers

  • cake bakers

  • and all those who did all the unseen work before and after the race, making medals and hauling decorations.

Put next year's Halloween weekend in your diaries, because we're already looking at permits for next year. It'll be the Nightmare's 10th birthday! If you can't make it that morning, that doesn't mean you have to miss out - there's plenty of ways to get involved before and after the event, such as medal making, transport, and post-event duties.

Christmas Party and 2023 Volunteer Awards

There are only a handful of tickets left for the 2023 Christmas Party! Join us for our annual festive shindig on Friday December 1st.  Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

As part of the festivities, we'll be holding the annual Volunteer Awards. This is where we recognise those who have gone the extra mile to make our club what it is.

Which means we need your help! Anyone who has volunteered for SRC can be nominated - except for Drew, Andy V and Sam B, who as Club Directors will have the job of deciding the awards, and are therefore ineligible for consideration.

You can nominate anyone for anything you like - we make up the categories to fit the winners rather than the other way around.

Please email us with your nominations. Especially the "unsung heroes" who might be overlooked by other nominators.

And there's lots more events coming up in November:

London Marathon ballot

It’s finally that time! Now that the Nightingale Nightmare has been successfully run and you’re resting your weary volunteer feet, why not enter the club ballot for the 2024 London Marathon!

Entries are open until midday on the 6th November, and the draw will be held on Tuesday 7th November at club, after everyone is back from their runs (so around 8pm).

We have two places up for grabs, and this year the following criteria must be met to enter:

1. You are a fully paid-up club member and England Athletics member as of 25th July 2023
2. You entered and were rejected from the main ballot
3. You have volunteered for SRC in some capacity in the last year – Nightingale Nightmare, helping out at Parkrun, leading club runs etc
4. You must not have run the London Marathon in the last 5 years (2019 onwards) – for those that have, watch this space as we’re looking into a replacement volunteer perk for you!
5. All entrants must appear at the draw in person on the night, unless they physically cannot make it, in which case you will need to let us know in advance with a valid excuse.

Click here to submit your entry. Thanks to Penny Guess for organising.

Annual General Meeting

Join us at The Steam Crane after running on Tuesday 21st November for our Annual General Meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend and have their say in how the club is run.

The agenda is currently as follows:
1. Election of officers
2. Finance
3. Key volunteer roles
4. Track Sessions
5. Race calendar
6. Nightingale Nightmare
7. Kit
8. Renewal/replacement of equipment
9. Run leader training

If you would like anything added to the agenda, please email the Club Secretary.

New kit orders close this weekend

Time is running out to order your new SRC kit! We have vests and T-shirts in men's and women's designs featuring our big and bold new logo (modelled right).

Kit orders close on Sunday 5th November - if you don't get your order in by then, you will have to wait until we open orders again.

Head to the Scimitar website to get your kit - they won't be stocked at BW Cycling.

Parkrun news

As always, the first Saturday of the month will see a big SRC turnout at Ashton Court. That's tomorrow on Saturday 4th November.

A big thank you to everyone who came out last month and dressed up in Halloween costumes to sell our last places in the Nightmare.

Parkrun Tourism Day this month follows one week later on Saturday 11th November, and this month we're heading to Five Arches parkrun at Radstock. The course is two loops (one short and one long) of a flat tarmac path, so good PB potential. If you need a lift or can help us out with one, head to the Facebook group

And there's an extra special tourism day coming up in the New Year - on the weekend of Saturday 13th January we'll be heading to Zuiderpark at the Hague, Netherlands. Perfect for anyone looking to complete their parkrun A-Z!

There's also a coastal 10k and Half Marathon not far north at Egmond on Sunday 14th, for those who want to make the most of their weekend.

A number of us already have accommodation booked at Hotel Ibis den Haag, and there's a few flight options that weekend with KLM. Head to the Facebook event for more info on what others are doing.

SRC group runs

Rich Pierce will be leading a social run of the Gordano Round on Sunday December 3rd - all are welcome for a post Xmas party blow out.

The route will take in 27 miles of glorious North Somerset countryside with coastal path and woodland. The pace will average 11 minute miles overall to be suitable for all runners - faster runners are welcome to push on and loop back.

Meet at Abbots Pool at 8am.

If that's not enough, Jim Plunkett-Cole will be leading the traditional New Year's Eve run round the Green Man - all 45 miles of it in one big lap of Bristol. (And if that's a bit of a stretch, you can always catch the train in Keynsham around 16 miles in, or at Parkway at 30 miles.) All are welcome - groups of similar paced runners tend to form naturally. It may not have the logistics of the official Green Man ultras - but it's free!
