Southville RC Newsletter January 2024

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to 2024 - and hello to our new members!


In true SRC style, we're going straight into the social news for the first newsletter of the month.

We'll be holding a New Member's Social on Saturday January 27th at 11am in the Tobacco Factory on North Street. This social is especially, but not exclusively, for those who've joined us recently. The old lags are invited as well so we can all get to know each other. 

As the social starts at 11am, everyone has time to do their Parkruns, shower if preferred and join us for coffee. (The marshmallow hot chocolate also comes highly recommended.) There might just be some of us staying on as we move into beer o' clock as well...

And if you prefer your socials in the evening, we've got you covered: the SRC Skittles Social is on Friday 9th February at 7pm.

You don't need any experience, teammates or talent; just turn up with £2 towards the room hire. We'll be explaining the rules and randomly assigning teams on the night, and skittles is very easy to play. 

Don't be fashionably late; if you turn up after the 7.30pm kick-off, we might not be able to get you into a team.

There will be a prize for the best team on the night (and potentially more to be won).

AGM Minutes

A big thank you to everyone who attended January's Annual General Meeting. Drew McLellan stepped down as our Chair with our thanks and a heartfelt statement that reflected on the many achievements over his four-year tenure, particularly keeping the club going throughout the pandemic.

Drew's leaving statement can be read on our Facebook group.

Chris Hopes takes the reins as our new Chair, while Bindal Shah, Andrew Ventham and Sam Blanning resume their seats as Membership Officer, Treasurer and Club Secretary respectively.

Parkrun news

We always make a special effort to turn out in our green tops at the first Saturday of the month in Ashton Court. The next will be on Saturday 3rd February.

Before that there's our January tourism day coming up; we're heading to Sharpham Fields in Cheddar tomorrow on Saturday 20th January.

February's tourism will be closer to home; we'll be heading to Pomphrey Hill in Mangotsfield on Saturday 10th February.

And on February 24th we'll be staging another takeover of Ashton Court parkrun. This is when we'll be filling out the whole volunteer roster as a club (and potentially adding some pacers) to give back to the parkrun community.

There's already been a big Parkrun tourism day this month as a big group of Southvillers headed to the Netherlands to run Zuiderpark parkrun. A big thank you to our Club Captains Laura and Sophie for helping everyone complete their parkrun alphabet!
 
Race news

Nailsea RC's Ironwood Challenge takes place on Sunday 25 February. This event always sees a big Southville turnout and is highly recommended, consisting of six-ish miles of hills, forest trail and the infamous rope climb. Make sure you head up to the Miner's Rest afterwards for refuelling.

If you don't fancy that, there's also the first of Relish Running's Two Tunnels races in Bath on the same day, featuring 5k, 10k, half-marathon, and colourburst runs for the kids. (But you can always wait to the June and August editions.)
