Southville RC Newsletter November 2024

Hi Everyone,

London Marathon club ballot - 12th November

It's nearly time to draw our London Marathon places!

The London Marathon gives us two places to allocate to our runners who did not win a place in the general ballot or via Good For Age. The draw will be held on Tuesday 12th Novemberat club, after everyone is back from their runs (so around 7.45pm).

The following criteria must be met to enter:

1. You are a fully paid-up club member and England Athletics member for 24/25. (Our London Marathon allocation is based on our number of EA-registered members.)
2. You entered the main ballot and did not receive a place. Please bring proof of rejection to the draw.
3. You have volunteered for SRC in some capacity in the last year, such as organising socials, taking part in a Parkrun takeover, leading club runs, or anything else SRC-related.
4. You must not have run the London Marathon in the last 5 years (2020 onwards).
5. All entrants must appear at the draw in person on the night, unless they physically cannot make it, in which case you will need to email us with your reason for needing a remote entry.
6. You are serious about entering the race and training to run the 26.2 mile distance. The organisers only allow a very short window for replacing runners, which means that if a winner pulls out, their place will be lost.

Look forward to seeing you on the night to see who takes this year's places, and celebrate with our winners!

Kit order coming soon

Our quarterly kit order will soon be open; and for the first time ever you will be able to get your SRC kit in fluorescent green! Watch this space, as if you miss this order you will have to wait another three months.

Christmas Party tickets on sale - and Volunteer Awards nominations are open

Get your tickets for the SRC Christmas Party now! 🎟️🪩🕺🏽
🎵 DJ Rich Pearce will be back
🥪 Food provided by Sandwich Sandwich
👗 Dressing up encouraged!

The party will kick off at the Cock & Trail on Commercial Road at 7.30pm.

Tickets are available via Headfirst.

At the Christmas Party we'll be holding our annual Volunteer Awards, where we recognise the people who keep SRC going. As the Nightingale Nightmare is taking a break this year, this is an especially good year to recognise the less visible volunteers.

To nominate someone for an award, email us. The final winners will be chosen by SRC's Directors (Andrew Ventham, Bindal Shah, Chris Hopes and Sam Blanning) who are ineligible for nomination. You can nominate any of our volunteers for any efforts on SRC's behalf.

Race roundup

The autumn race season continued, and a swathe of SRC runners had some amazing marathon results, with Olly Ready and Lukasz securing PBs at Berlin and Loch Ness, Alex Price PBing in Chicago, and Liam PBing under three hours in Amsterdam. Nic put her ultra experience to good use in running her first marathon in Ljubljana.  Teresa Oakes won the bronze in her category at Loch Ness, and Katie Egan made the women's top 10 at Budapest.

In the half marathon distance, Ben McCabe ran a PB at Kingston, Jenny Thomson and Carrie Eichstedt ran PBs at Oxford, Ross Blackman ran a PB at Stroud, Stuart Plumridge ran his first at Bournemouth, and Dave Thorpe, Laura Pease and Joe Woodley ran PBs at Burnhan.

Elsewhere Nathan PBed at the Chippendale Lightning Bolt 10k with a sub-38, Aisling and Carrie were the 4th and 8th women at the Black Nore Portishead 10k, and Magic ploughed through the river to claim the vet-40 gold at the Keynsham Dandy.

Close to home there was the usual big SRC turnout at the Weston Prom Run, with 26 representing the Green Army. Jacob Dunkley, Dave Thorpe, Rachael Lammey and Penny Guess all ran PBs, with Penny winning 3rd female along the way.

The next Weston Prom will be Thursday 28th November; the perfect way to keep your racing momentum going through the winter months. Head to our members-only WhatsApp communityif you're looking for a lift or willing to offer one.

Don't forget to tag our Instagram or Tiktok when you've been racing, so we can celebrate everyone's achievements.

Parkrun

Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday all over the country and all over the world. There are also 2k Junior Parkruns for those 14 and under.

Most of Bristol's many parkruns will see an SRC presence most weeks, but on the first Saturday of each month we make an extra special effort to get a big SRC turnout to support each other at our nearest parkrun, Ashton Court, and share a coffee in the café afterwards. This month that's Saturday November 2nd - if you've missed today's, come along on 7th December, and there's almost certain to be some SRC presence at Ashton Court every week.

Once a month we head to a parkrun further afield for some tourism. In November we have an extra special trip coming up: we've hired a bus to take us to Bushy Park, the birthplace of parkrun, where the very first parkrun was hosted just over 20 years ago. We'll run Bushy Park, get brunch and leave London at 12:30. To be part of our road trip, head to Head First where you can buy a return ticket for £32.40.
