Southville RC Newsletter October 2024
Hi Everyone,
Quarterly General Meeting minutes
The minutes for September's Quarterly General Meeting are now available. Please let Sam know if there are any omissions or errors.
The next general meeting will be in January and will be our Annual General Meeting, including the election of Club Directors.
Thanks to all those who took part in the club survey before the QGM. The results can be seen here.
Among the items on the agenda were a proposal put together by Drew McLellan and other volunteers to make a regular electronic payment available to run alongside the traditional 50p in a tin. Drew's proposal, which was unanimously approved at the QGM, can be read here as an appendix to the minutes.
Paella and a pint tomorrow
We're having our latest post-run food social tomorrow on Tuesday 1st October. The Southbank is offering paella and a pint for just £10. No pre-orders are necessary (just order at the bar after running), but we'd appreciate it if you could go to the WhatsApp group and click the poll you'll find in the Announcements section, posted 22 September by Kayleigh.
Join us for some recovery fuel and a great way to meet your fellow runners.
Mandatory hi viz
Apart from your £10 for the food, the other thing you'll need is some hi visibility kit, meaning fluorescent clothing, flashing lights or reflective strips.
Hi viz kit is now mandatory for all our running nights until the clocks go forward in the spring, effective tomorrow. No hi viz, no run. We will have some kit to borrow for new runners, but everyone reading this should have their own. Reflective clothing can be bought cheaply from Lidl, Aldi and other good retailers.
We also hope to have SRC-branded tops in fluorescent green available in the new future, so watch out for our next kit pre-order.
On another safety note, we are reminding all runners that if you choose to run ahead of the group leader on any running night, you are running on your own at that point, and should loop back to the back if you lose sight of the leader or are unsure where to go next. The group leader is responsible for keeping to the advertised pace, and has no obligation to stop those who run off the front from going the wrong way.
Trail shoes demo at Kinisi Run Hub
SRC is joining forces with Kinisi Run Hub (the new running shop on East Street) and Merrell for a free bonus weeknight club run this Wednesday 2nd October at 6pm.
At the event, you'll have the chance to try out some of the new Merrell Agility Peak 5 trail shoes.
We'll do some guided runs to Victoria Park to try a bit of off-road running in the shoes before we return to Kinisi Run Hub for some snacks and drinks afterwards.
Start/finish at: Kinisi Run Hub, 2 Imperial Arcade, East Street, Bristol, BS3 4HH.
To make sure Merrell bring enough shoes, fill in this form to register.
Thanks to Liam Coleman for organising.
Race roundup
October will be another big month for racing, with the Bristol to Bath Trial Marathon, Keynsham Dandy, Mendip Muddle, Bath & Bristol Railway races and the 2nd Weston Prom of the year. Get involved before the race season starts to peter out as we head into the winter. Head to Dates for your Diary at the bottom for the details of all of these.
And on the subject of dates for your diary, pencil in Saturday 21 December as the day of the unmissable SRC Christmas Party. More details to follow.
September started with our own Match Your Time Race, the SRC race that anyone can win, as the winner is not the fastest, but whoever can pace themselves and hit their target time most accurately over 5k, without the aid of their Garmin or other gadgetry. Clara Von Eye finished only 1 second away from her target of 27:27, Hayley Fox-Fitzgerald took silver with 3 seconds away, and Holly Davies came third with 8 seconds away.
Among other highlights for September were Simon Cardnell running an incredible 102 miles in the Cotswold Way Century, and a 1:24 PB for our Deputy Chair Liam at the Cirencester Half.
Parkrun
Parkrun is a free weekly timed 5k run that takes place every Saturday all over the country and all over the world. There are also 2k Junior Parkruns for those 14 and under.
Most of Bristol's many parkruns will see an SRC presence most weeks, but on the first Saturday of each month we make an extra special effort to get a big SRC turnout to support each other at our nearest parkrun, Ashton Court, and share a coffee in the café afterwards. This month that's Saturday October 5th.
Once a month we head to a parkrun further afield for some tourism, and in October we'll be over the bridge at Newport parkrun on Saturday October 26th. It's two laps in the stately grounds of Tredegar House. If you need a lift or can offer one, head to our WhatsApp group to co-ordinate.
And after the success of January's trip to Zuiderpark, we're planning another bit of extra-touristy tourism in the New Year; a number of Southvillers will be doing Hasenheide Parkrun in Berlin, and staying in Titanic Comfort Mitte for a weekend away on Saturday January 18th. Let Liam know if you would like more details.
