Southville RC Newsletter July 2024

Hi Everyone,

Race roundup

The Clevedon 10k on 11th June saw yet another massive SRC turnout (pictured). With the conditions unusually mild for the midsummer evening, we saw a huge clutch of PBs, with Tilia, Faisal, Ben, Rachel, Alex, Jenny, Penny, Daisy, Mark, Rachael, Ross, Kayleigh, Ana and Yasmin all hitting personal bests.

It was also a successful night for SRC at the top of the leaderboard: Penny was 1st lady, Katie Egan was 3rd lady and 2nd vet-40, Gareth Williams also took 2nd vet-40 in the mens, and Daisy Nichols came in 5th. To sum up our joint efforts, Penny, Katie, Daisy and Kate Cleary won the ladies' team prize. A huge congratulations to everyone!

Then the weekend of 22nd June we headed to the Breakheart Backyard ultra, a brutally simple race: every hour, on the hour you have to complete a 4.2 mile lap. Get back to the start line before the hour is up, and you can do it all over again; otherwise you go down as Did Not Finish.

We had 12 runners, and an amazing gang of supporters to keep them going. A special congratulations to Charlotte who came 1st after completing 100 miles in the ladies' competition, and 3rd overall.

Yasmin, Kayleigh and Dave also hit PBs at the Westonbirt 10k, and Julia PBed at the Thornbury 10k.

SRC Championship winners

The SRC Championship concluded with the Clevedon 10k, and after three months of racing and chasing targets, the winners were:

3rd: Jamie Walker
2nd: Rachel Louise Jones
1st: Kayleigh Doherty

A huge congratulations to Kayleigh and the rest of the podium, and a massive thanks to Chris Hopes for all his hard work organising and setting targets over the recent months.

Social news

Thanks to Jack Phillips for organising the first Sports Day since 2013!

This month's social is a big one: there's just a few tickets left for the SRC Summer Party on Friday July 26th. Join us for a fun-filled affair at The Thunderbolt with dancing, nibbles and drinks!

Quarterly General Meeting

Thanks to everyone who attended our QGM on 18th June. There was lots of productive discussion and valuable input on how to take the club forward. The minutes can be
read here. At the meeting we approved the club's new Inclusion Policy and updated Constitution, which have been uploaded to the website.

Cider Frolic 19th - 21st July

SRC is returning to the Cider & Piggy Plod 2024!

Sign up and join the fun at the Cranborne Chase Cider Farm in Somerset this July. The event is a fantastic social weekend with a bit of running thrown in, & you can run as much or as little as you like! Last year Southville swept the leader board winning most of the categories at the event!

The event involves running around a set lap (which is approx. 5-6km) over a set time period. During this time period you can run as much or as little as you like, so you can simply run one lap, you could take breaks in-between laps or you could keep running for the entire time.

You can enter the Cider 24 starting 6pm Friday 19th, or the Cider 12 starting 8am on Saturday 20th, as a solo or a team of up to 4.

Camping is available at the farm with great facilities (hot showers, food/coffee trucks and a big marquee with Saturday night entertainment). Last year most people camped from Friday night – Sunday morning to get the most out of the weekend.

Nightingale Nightmare will not run in 2024

Sadly the Nightingale Nightmare will be taking a fallow year in 2024. Due to the anticipated closure of the Towpath, on top of the current closure of the main footpath from the race HQ to the start, we decided at the QGM that we cannot be certain whether the race will be feasible.

A Race X committee has been formed to explore alternative options for a 2024 race. Want to get involved in a brand new race? Head over the to the committee channel on our
members' WhatsApp group.

Parkrun news
